Social & Environmental Justice Research
Marginalized populations face disproportionate exposure to a variety of social and environmental injustices, including pollution, extreme heat, housing insecurity and wealth disparities, often based on factors such as race, gender, class, and ability. Both social and environmental justice movements seek to address systemic injustices and promote inclusivity, participation, and empowerment. Research in ESS examines spatial marginalization, precarity, exposure to environmental hazards, indigenous knowledges, land access, and links between social inequities, environmental degradation, and public health. Faculty and students explore opportunities for marginalized communities in Utah and beyond to engage in decision-making processes and voice their preferences around environmental issues.
